Mercury: The College Sports Company

Mercury is a fan engagement company for collegiate sports programs. The company’s thesis was built around the premise of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). Initially, Mercury considered Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) as the most kosher way to facilitate the transfer of this value. However, the NFT market for consumer/retail fell apart in the Fall and died with FTX, leading Mercury to pivot away from specialized college sports NFT issuance platform.

Instead, Mercury is leaning into content as a way to attract eyeballs to generate sponsor/booster/fan dollars. The company is currently negotiating a media/content deal with the Big 12 conference. Over the past three years, Mercury has secured NIL deals with over 100 athletes, including a similar deal with the star quarterback at Clemson, Cade Klubnik.

Mercury’s strategy seems to be paying off, with the company reporting 40 million impressions monthly across all platforms/shows, and 20 million video views monthly.
