The college sports Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) market has experienced significant growth since its inception. In the first year, college athletes collectively made an estimated $917 million from NIL payments, with the most lucrative deals going to football and men’s basketball stars. The market is projected to reach $1.14 billion in the near future.
In the first year of NIL, about 17% of student-athletes at Division I institutions participated in NIL activities. NCAA Division I athletes reportedly earned an average of $3,711 in the first year of NIL. According to the NCAA, 58% of Division I student-athletes receive some athletic aid, with the majority receiving partial scholarships and supplementing their athletic aid with need-based financial aid. NIL’s impact goes beyond high-profile athletes getting rich, as it also helps Olympic and non-revenue sport athletes mitigate student debt through NIL opportunities.
The third year of the NIL era could yield a market of up to $1.17 billion, with NIL collectives playing a significant role. Collectives are groups of boosters and donors who pool resources to help athletes at a particular school. Over the past year, three-quarters of the NIL market revenue came from collective dollars. Power 5 football players receive an average of $7,262 for each collective activity they complete, while men’s basketball players receive $4,929, and women’s basketball players receive $2,070.
The NIL market is expected to continue growing, with diversity playing a crucial role in driving the market up to $1.1 billion. As college athletes gain more control over their NIL rights, brands are making more extensive investments in them, leading to a more equitable and inclusive college sports landscape.
