## Glossary

Artificial Intelligence (AI): The theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.

AI Governance: The process of managing, directing, and monitoring the use of artificial intelligence in a system or organization. It includes principles, guidelines, and practices designed to ensure that AI is used ethically, safely, and effectively.

Machine Learning (ML): A subset of AI that involves the practice of using algorithms to parse data, learn from it, and then make a determination or prediction about something.

Benevolent AI: An AI system designed and used in such a way that it acts for the benefit of all humanity. It implies that AI has a positive influence and is beneficial to humans, in contrast to AI systems that could potentially cause harm.

Dystopia: A community or society that is undesirable or frightening, often explored in works of fiction. The term is an antonym of utopia, a term for an ideal society.

Utopia: A community or society possessing highly desirable or perfect qualities. The opposite of a dystopia.

‘iRobot’: A 2004 science fiction movie set in the future, where a sophisticated AI system governs robots and evolves to a point where it tries to control human society for what it perceives as the greater good.

Paradox: A statement or proposition that, despite sound (or apparently sound) reasoning from acceptable premises, leads to a conclusion that seems senseless, logically unacceptable, or self-contradictory.

Ethical AI: The practice of creating and implementing AI in a way that aligns with ethical principles, prioritizing fairness, accountability, transparency, and the overall welfare of humanity.
